Founded in Austria in 1980, Falstaff is the leading magazine for wine, cuisine and travel in the German-speaking world — and an audience that pays close attention to detail. For the Austrian online edition, rockit handled the technical side for many years: a TYPO3 portal that pulled magazine content, wine and restaurant databases, and editorial tools together under one roof. The voting and rating platforms built for Falstaff are still running today.
- Engineering and ongoing operation of the falstaff.at portal through 2016
- Full-text search across articles and databases via an Apache Solr server
- Wine database of roughly 5,000 wines rated on the 100-point scale
- Voting and rating system for wines and restaurants, including SMS voting
- Quizzes, polls, news system, RSS feeds and newsletter integration
- E-paper with a JavaScript page-flipper, generated automatically from the print PDF
- Connections to the wine and user databases, geo-location, the Comnex ad server, and social-media embeds
The platform built with rockit made Falstaff one of the first Austrian publishers to bring editorial content, large rating databases and reader interaction together in a single stack. Readers find a wine, a venue and a rating in one click — and the editorial team works from one shared dataset.
